Cell Splitting:

Each cell site can handle only specific amount of calls at a time ie.,12 to 40 voice calls for example. If the number of calls gets increased, the cell has to split and additional tower has to be installed to handle the capacity.

You can note that tower 2 is splitted into 2a and 2b, this is done to handle more calls. You can see the height of 2a and 2b is lower than 2.  Kindly note that antenna size must be reduced during splitting to avoid interference.

In order to do cell splitting, height of original antenna has to be reduced, so it covers lower distance, then additional tower is added. You can see many Airtel and Vodafone towers in metro areas (you may notice one tower for each 2 streets) than that of Tata docomo or Reliance GSM because they have done cell splitting to handle more calls.

There won't be much traffic in Rural areas, that is why you see low number of towers there.

Cell Sectoring:

In the above image, you can see three sectors, In sectoring, one more sector is added in addition. ie tower will have 4 sectors.

Repeater:

Repeater is used to boost signal. It does not act as cell phone tower.

For eg: If the cell phone tower is in SSM College and repeater is placed in Valayakaranoor, your Cell Info Display will show as SSM college even if you are in Valayakaranoor. Repeaters are not added in BSC/MSC. They will take channels from the cell phone tower.
